RESEARCH INTERESTS

MENG’s laboratory main research focuses are:

Poultry Genetics and Breeding

Genetic variation contribute majority of the phenotypic variations in domestic animals. We focuses on using quantitative and molecular genetics methods to mapping genes and quantitative trait loci. Apply markers assistant selection (MSS)or whole genome selection(WGS) to animal breeding in order to improve economically-important characters in chicken or other domestic animals.

Animal Genomics

To better understand the genetic basis, we have finished whole genome sequencing of multiple animals used the latest next-generation sequencing technique, as the wild and domestic bactrian camel, the wild horse (Przewalski’s horse) the domestic horse (Mongolian horse), the donkey and asiatic wild ass, the domestic goose and anser cygnoides. Through the comparative genomics analyses
and computational tools to understanding of the gene variations and evolution story,

Host and Gut microbiota Interaction

Several studies, included our discovery, already proved that gut microbiota composition in adults can be viewed as a complex, polygenic trait with a synergy of host genetic and environmental factors. In our previous studies, we introduced heritability as an indicator to estimate the contributions from the host genetic variation. Alter those genes’ frequency would influence the interaction between specific gut microbiota. Currently, we investigate in how host genetic variation not only influence the composition of gut microbiota, but also the alternation cause the improvement of function performance of microbiota by enrich the abundance of relative microbiota.
